The goal of the Butterflyway Project is to provide food and shelter for butterflies, bee and other beneficial bugs by establishing a network of wildflower patches, big and small, through neighbourhoods across Canada, starting in five cities in 2017.

The project will begin in Toronto, Markham, Richmond, Victoria and Montreal in early 2017. In each city we will be recruiting a team of community volunteers, called the Butterflyway Patrol. These local Butterflyway Patrols will be trained by the David Suzuki Foundation in March and sent back to their neighbourhoods with a mission to plant native wildflowers and shrubs in yards, schools, streets and parks.

Once a Butterflyway Patrol team plants at least a dozen pollinator patches in their neighbourhood, they will formally be recognized by the David Suzuki Foundation as an official Butterflyway, through signage and inclusion in our national Butterflyway Project map.

If you live in any of these five cities and want to learn more, sign up here. We will be recruiting local Butterflyway Patrols in February, with training sessions in each city in March.

The project is based on the David Suzuki Foundation’s Homegrown National Park Project, which began in 2013. The award-winning, citizen-led project has begun creating butterfly-friendly corridors in three Toronto neighbourhoods, establishing pollinator patches in parks, front yard rain gardens and schoolyard canoe planters.
